Choosing Your First Guitar: Acoustic Or Electric

Willie Shaw

When shopping for a guitar, you have two main options – acoustic or electric. As a novice, the process would be so much easier if someone could definitively say that one option was better than the other. It's not quite that simple. There is a variety of factors that must be taken into account in order to make the right selection. Make sure you know what to look for, to make a more accurate decision.

Cost

The cost of an acoustic guitar and electric guitar is quite different. Not only when it comes to the actual cost of the guitar, but also with other important accessories you need. A large part of what makes an electric guitar sound great is the amplifier--not just any cheap amplifier, but a high-quality one. With an acoustic option, you only have the cost of the guitar. If you're not confident that you want to play the guitar long-term, it might be a better idea to purchase an acoustic guitar so that you can make a smaller initial investment.

Playability

Another factor to consider is playability. How easy is the guitar to play? A number of people assume that electric guitars are more difficult to play; however, this isn't always the case. Think of an acoustic guitar as a manual option where you must do all the work.

The barre chords on the guitar take a lot of forceful finger strength to maneuver and produce sound. When practicing for long periods, this can be somewhat uncomfortable. Electric guitars on the other hand have strings that are thinner and easier to press down so discomfort isn't an issue.

Music Style

It's also important to consider what music style you are into. The sound produced from an acoustic guitar is quite different from an electric guitar. If you're looking to rock out, you want an electric guitar. However, if you want to emulate a more mellow tune or flow, then you probably want to choose an acoustic option.

Stuck in the middle and don't really know what you're into just yet? Consider an acoustic guitar. An acoustic guitar will help you get familiar with guitar sounds and techniques first so that you can make your decision later.

When learning to play, your experience will be measured by how well you enjoy your guitar. For this reason, you don't want to purchase your guitar in haste. Take your time to ensure you've made the right decision.

About Me
Shopping Smarter, Not Harder

After I became a mother, I realized that I was going to be spending quite some time shopping for supplies. I knew that when I wasn't getting groceries, I would likely be finding new clothes for my kids to wear and trying to find things for the house. Instead of spending loads of money on all of these shopping trips, I started trying to shop smarter, not harder. I started carefully evaluating things like price tags and sales, and it really made a big difference in our lives. This blog is all about saving money by buying the right things, and knowing how to avoid problems from overspending.
