Want A Fun And Easy Project? Make A Tote Bag Using T Shirts

Willie Shaw

Making a t shirt tote bag is easy and one great thing about this project is that you do not have to sew anything at all. This means your children can help you, and if they are old enough, they can make their own bag by their selves.  Tote bags are fun for kids to put things in to carry them around, and they can be very useful for you. Follow the instructions below to make this bag.

T shirt Tote Bag

All you need for this project is some t shirts and scissors. Use different colored shirts for these bags. You could even tie dye some of them to make them look unique, and this is something fun for your children to do. If you have never tie dyed a shirt before, you may be surprised at how easy it is, and you only need a few supplies.

You could also purchase some cheap printed t shirts, such as from http://www.absolutescreenprinting.com, so you can have a decorative t shirt tote bag. There are many prints you can find that you would love, as well as your children.

Lay the t shirts you have chosen on a table and use the scissors to cut off the sleeves.  You will be using the sleeves as the handles for the bag. Next, cut out the neckline of each shirt.  You will now need to determine how deep you want your tote bags to be. You may want to consider making the tote bags smaller for young children, and much deeper for a teenager or yourself. Turn the t shirt inside out. Trace a line across the bottom of how deep you decided you wanted it.

Now you can put some fringe on the bottom of each tote bag to make them look more unique and give them some style. Cut the slits approximately an inch or so apart up to the line that you drew on the bottom. Starting at one end, grab two pair of fringe and tie them into a double knot, do the same thing with the next two, and continue until fringe all are tied. Pull them tight, as this is what holds your tote together. You need to make sure there are no holes between each pair of fringe, so make sure you double knot each one.

You should now have a t shirt tote bag. Let your kids decorate their bags with fabric markers, if you used plain t shirts. They could put their name on the tote or draw a design on it.

About Me
Shopping Smarter, Not Harder

After I became a mother, I realized that I was going to be spending quite some time shopping for supplies. I knew that when I wasn't getting groceries, I would likely be finding new clothes for my kids to wear and trying to find things for the house. Instead of spending loads of money on all of these shopping trips, I started trying to shop smarter, not harder. I started carefully evaluating things like price tags and sales, and it really made a big difference in our lives. This blog is all about saving money by buying the right things, and knowing how to avoid problems from overspending.
